Stroke is the third single cause of death in the UK and has a devastating impact on people’s lives, their families, and carers. It’s the fourth biggest killer in the UK, and a leading cause of disability. Over recent years, there have been significant advances in proven, highly effective methods of stroke treatment and care.

NHS Somerset are committed to understanding the local needs of the population. This is to ensure we can continue to deliver the best possible healthcare services in Somerset which meet the needs of our population.

Following the Somerset Stroke Strategy review in 2019, it was identified that there was a need to review the current configuration of hyper acute stroke services in Somerset. This work was paused during the covid-19 pandemic but has now restarted.

Our ambition is to develop our hyper acute stroke services so that the people of Somerset receive timely, acute stroke interventions; able to access world-class services regardless of where they live. We believe that improving the way hyper acute stroke services are delivered will enable better coordination of care and ensure that patients and their carers have access to the right help in the right place at the right time.
